Description
Nannyberry viburnum is a multi-stemmed, upright shrub with semi-arching branches. Provides wonderful color the whole year with white flower clusters in spring, dense dark-green summer foliage, wine-red fall color and blue-black berries which persist through winter. Adaptable to most soils except very wet. Blooms on old wood. May spread by suckering but may also be grown as a small single-trunk tree. Attracts birds, butterflies and is a larval host for the Spring azure. Nannyberry has “perfect” flowers – flowers with both male and female parts. They are self-infertile and cross pollination is needed for reliable fruit production. Two or three shrubs are recommended for ample fruiting. V. lentago is classified by Cornell University as being “moderately susceptible” to viburnum leaf beetle but are usually not destroyed. Height: 14-16 ft. Spread: 6-12 ft. Growth rate: Fast, at 2-2.5 ft per year Family: Adoxaceae Bloom time: May Sun: full sun to part shade Water: medium Deer resistant
