Description
A deciduous shrub with numerous upright stems and twiggy branches. Reddish-green spring leaves turn blue-green in summer and red, yellow, orange and purple in fall. White or pink bell-shaped flowers in drooping clusters are followed by edible blue fruit. Attracts birds. Special value to native bees. Best grown in acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich soils. Shallow, fibrous roots need constant moisture and good drainage. Plants appreciate a good organic mulch. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop. It is best to plant more than one variety that will bloom at the same time. Remove flowers in the year of planting and the following year so as to prevent fruit set and encourage new vegetative growth. Prune as needed in late winter beginning in the third year after planting. Height: 6-12 ft. Spread: 8-12 ft. Family: Ericaceae Bloom time: May Sun: full sun to part shade Water: medium to wet Hedge photo credit: Rob Hille
