Description

Mound-shaped, suckering, deciduous shrub. Exfoliating bark. Glossy, dark-green leaves have yellow, red and purple fall foliage. The more sun it receives, the more fall color it gives! Diervilla is not a true honeysuckle but the flowers resemble that of a honeysuckle. Small, bell-shaped flowers are yellow-green at first, becoming orange or purplish-red. A very colorful shrub! This plant is not to be confused with the invasive honeysuckles. (Tip – native honeysuckles have solid stems while invasive honeysuckles have hollow stems.)

Special value to bumblebees.

Fast growing. Good for naturalizing, a hedge or erosion control. Tolerates drought. Plants may be propagated by transplanting suckers but are also easy to grow from seed.
