Description
Ninebark is an upright, fast-growing, spreading shrub with arching branches – an excellent native shrub for year-round interest! White spiraea-like flowers are followed by attractive and persistent red fruit pods (aging to brown). Yellow fall color. Exfoliating bark peels in strips to reveal several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark (thus the common name). Tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. Appreciates afternoon shade. Prune as needed immediately after bloom and no later than mid-August. Attracts birds and bees. ‘Ginger Wine’ was selected for spring foliage that emerges a sunny orange color and matures to sparkling burgundy. Same clusters of white flowers and red seed heads as the straight species. It glows! Height: 5-6 ft. Spread: 5-6 ft. Family: Rosaceae Bloom time: May to June Sun: full sun to part shade Water: dry to medium Hedge, erosion control photo credit: Proven Winners a Proven Winners plant
