Description
Hut 2 ‘Legend of the Small’ is a cultivar of the native Fothergilla selected for compactness of size (thus the name!). It produces an abundance of fragrant, bottle brush-like white flowers, has a well-branched mounding habit (half the size of the straight species), and small bluish-green leaves that age to a very attractive mosaic of yellow, orange, and red in autumn. Will naturalize by suckering if planted in favorable conditions – great if you want it to cover some ground, but easily maintained if you don’t! Blooms on old wood. Pruning is not necessary, and should be avoided as recovery is slow. Avoid cutting into thick stems unless removing them entirely. Shade tolerant, but best flowering occurs in full sun. Height: 2-2.5 ft. Spread: 2-4 ft. Family: Hamamelidaceae Bloom time: April to May Sun: full sun to part shade Water: medium Deer resistant photo credit: Proven Winners a Proven Winners plant
