Description
Hut 2 An upright, multi-stemmed shrub with conspicuous red twigs which are striking against snow. Flat-topped clusters of fragrant, creamy-white blossoms are followed by umbrella-shaped clusters of pea-sized white berries. Medium green leaves turn shades of red, orange and purple in the fall. The best red color appears on one and two year old stems; older stems will turn corky and brown. It is common to prune one quarter of the older stems in early spring each year to stimulate new colorful stem growth. Great wildlife value. Attracts birds and butterflies. Larval host for Spring azure. ‘Arctic Fire Red’ is a dwarf cultivar that lacks the stoloniferous, spreading habit of the straight species. Height: 3-5 ft. Spread: 3-5 ft. Family: Cornaceae Bloom time: May to June Sun: full sun to part shade Water: medium to wet According to Rutgers University, Cornus sericea are “seldom severely damaged” by deer. photo credit: Proven Winners a Proven Winners plant
