Description
A plant for dry shade! A rhizomatous, clump-forming perennial with wiry stems. Racemes of flowers with pinkish-red sepals and pale yellow petals appear above the foliage in spring. New leaves in spring emerge with a red tinge, mature to green and turn reddish again in fall. Prefers rich, moist, woodland soils but will adapt to a wide range of conditions, including dry shade (even grows under large, thirsty trees!). Quick growing flower stems emerge in April, so if you don’t care for the aged caramel colored foliage from last year like I do (it’s pretty!) you may want to cut it off/mow it down in March. Spreads faster than other Epimediums. Vegetative growth occurs after flowering and new rhizomes develop in June. From mid-June to mid-August, if rainfall is limited, give plantings 3-4 deep waterings. May be divided in early fall. Height: 0.5-1 ft. Spread: 1-1.5 ft. Family: Berberidaceae Bloom time: April Sun: part shade to full shade Water: dry to medium Deer and rabbit resistant photo credit: Agnieszka Kwiecień, Nova
