Description
A mat-forming wildflower resembling wild strawberry but with happy bright yellow flowers. Trifoliate leaves are glossy with wedge-shaped leaflets, and are generally evergreen but may develop a bronzy patina in winter. Although this plant is strawberry-like, the fruit is neither fleshy nor edible at maturity (thus the common name). Spreads by runner-like rhizomes creeping just below the soil surface. Best as a ground cover for small areas of the border, rock garden, native plant garden, woodland garden or naturalized area. Tolerates a wide range of soils. Thrives in average, well-drained, humusy soils but also in difficult dry shaded sites. Can handle light foot traffic. Height: 0.25-0.5 ft. Spread: 0.5-1 ft. Family: Rosaceae Bloom time: April to May Sun: full sun to part shade; tolerates heavier shade Water: medium Groundcover, rain garden Deer resistant photo credit: Albert Herring Nimeä
