Description
Height: 5.00 to 7.00 feet Spread: 2.00 to 6.00 feet Family: Asteraceae Bloom time: August to October Sun: full sun to part shade Water: medium, medium-wet A tall, clump-forming prairie plant. Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with reflexed (drooping) petals and a slightly darker yellow protruding center disk bloom atop upright, stiff, hairy stems. Sessile or short-stalked, toothed leaves (4-12” long) are olive green and rough textured. Leaf tissue fans out along the stem, thus the common name of wingstem. Seeds are dispersed by wind or carried by birds and other mammals. Special value to native bees. Wingstem spreads by rhizomes and self-seeding, and will quickly colonize if happy. Best planted where it has the room to spread. Happy in moist situations, but tolerates variable moisture levels. photo credit: Fritzflohrreynolds
