The central brown disk protrudes 1/2 to 2 in. above the drooping petals, giving rise to a resemblance to a sombrero, thus the common name! Leaves on the lower portion of the stem are feathery and deeply cleft. Attracts birds and butterflies. Special value to native bees. Tolerates drought, light shade and somewhat poor soils.
