Description
P. laevigatus is shorter than the more well-known P. digitalis, growing only 2-4 ft tall. The individual flowers are a lavender/soft pink and smaller than the white flowers of P. digitalis. Both species display purple nectar guides to encourage our native bees to visit. The “beardtongue” of P. laevigatus is quite noticeable and bright yellow. Attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds. Penstemons are very drought tolerant perennials that are easy to grow and are rarely bothered by insects or diseases. Plant them in full sun and watch as hummingbirds feast on their delicious nectar. May deadhead to promote additional bloom. Tolerant of occasional drought once established. Avoid overly wet, poorly drained conditions. A light mulch in winter is recommended. Height: 1-3.5 ft. Spread: 2 ft. Family: Plantaginaceae Bloom time: May to July Sun: full sun Water: dry to medium Deer resistant photo credit: Michael Wolf
