Description
A mid-summer bloomer with large attractive flowers that are bursts of sunshine! This is not a woody shrub, but an herbaceous perennial with an upright habit. Stem-clasping leaves. Shiny, yellow, five-petaled blooms with long showy stamens. H. ascyron has a larger flower than other Hypericum species, thus the common name. Easily grown. Prefers full sun to light shade and moist conditions. This wildflower adapts to different kinds of soil, including loam, clay-loam, and rocky soil. The root system is rhizomatous, and small colonies of plants are often formed. Special value to native bees. Supports moth and butterfly caterpillars. Height: 2-5 ft. Spread: 1-3 ft.
