Description
Upright woodland perennial. Deeply lobed leaves with coarsely toothed margins develop characteristic “water stain” white spots as the plant matures. Tiny, white to lilac, bell-shaped flowers bloom in rounded clusters. Prefers moist soils high in organic matter, and may die back if soils dry out. Can spread aggressively and self-seed readily, and may not be a good choice for small landscapes, but it is a useful plant to quickly fill bare areas and help reduce soil erosion/replace invasives, especially in wooded areas or stream margins. Special value to native bees. Height: 1-2 ft. Spread: 1-2 ft. Family: Boraginaceae Bloom time: May to June Sun: part shade Water: medium to wet Deer may browse. photo credit: Fritz Flohr Reynolds
