Description
This beardtongue was named after two gemstones: onyx in reference to the dark foliage and pearls refers to the soft lavender flowers with white interiors. (From a distance, the two-lipped, tubular flowers look white.) Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. May deadhead to promote additional bloom. Tolerant of occasional drought once established. Avoid overly wet, poorly drained conditions. A light mulch in winter is recommended. Penstemons are very drought tolerant perennials that are easy to grow and are rarely bothered by insects or diseases. Plant them in full sun and watch as hummingbirds feast on their delicious nectar. Height: 3.5 ft. Spread: 3.5 ft. Family: Plantaginaceae Bloom time: May to June Sun: full sun Water: dry to medium Naturalize, rain garden Deer resistant photo credit: Walters Gardens
