Description
The most beautiful feature of this native grass is those delicate seed heads that sway in a breeze, and glow when backlit by the sun. Sea oats is a clump-forming, upright, cool season grass. Blue-green foliage ages to a bright yellow-gold in fall, especially in sunnier sites. Large, graceful seedheads morph from green in spring to ivory in summer and honey brown in fall. This grass is quite adaptable, and grows in moist fertile soils as well as drier sites. In optimum conditions, will self-sow enthusiastically. An extensive root system makes this a good grass for erosion control. Native grasses provide cover and food for songbirds, nesting material/structure for native bees, and are larval host plants.
